济水流域矗立着太行、王屋两座大山，高山险阻，百姓出行十分不便。住在北山的愚公决心移开大山，为百姓造福。他力排众议，带领全家和乡亲们手挖肩挑，将山石和泥土运到东海之滨。住在河湾的智叟听说后，讥笑愚公愚钝，认为凭愚公和村民有限的精力，不可能把两座大山挖平。愚公却认为，做事只要不畏艰难，持之以恒，就一定能成功，山不会增高，而致力于挖山的儿孙却代代相传，何愁不能将大山挖开。山神知道后，报告了天帝，天帝被愚公的精神所感动，派了两位大力神，将两座大山背走了。从此，百姓再也不受险阻所困，愚公精神也流传千古。

（英语）It is said that two mountains, Taihang and Wangwu, were connected together and created a blockage. They stood right in front of Yugong's house. The old man and his family had to tramp over mountains and hills to get in and out, which was particularly inconvenient. So 90-year old Yugong had a crazy idea: he and his family will move these mountains away. People thought he was old and insane!
When an old man named Zhisou learned about this, he thought it was so ridiculous that he tried to dissuade Yugong. He said, "You are so foolish. How can you dig up these two mountains with your limited energy? Besides, you are so old. How long do you think you can live?" But Yugong replied firmly, "Your stubborn ideas and lack of vision can not be compared even with the thoughts of widows and children. Even if I die, I still have my son. My son will have children and his grandchildren will have children, and so there will be endless generations of children and grandchildren! But in the meantime, the height of the mountain will not increase. So digging won’t stop until these mountains get flat ". With that said, he continued digging the mountains.
There was a mountain spirit in these mountains. The mountain spirit didn't care about Yugong and his family at all, but after hearing Yugong's words, he immediately felt this was a threat. Heaven and Earth are eternal, but humans might level the mountains – he thought. He hurriedly reported to the Emperor of Heaven. When the Emperor learned about Yugong's spirit, he was so moved that he sent two mighty spirits to carry the mountains away. One is in north Shanxi and the other is in south of Yongzhou. Ever since then, this area is a plain, which is no longer blocked by mountains.
